Coastpak Holdings Ltd is located just outside of the Hokitika township on the rugged West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Coastpak is the processor of New Zealand Sphagnum moss for the Pacific Wide Group. Coastpak was set up in February 1989 to fulfil the needs of Pacific Wide (NZ) Ltd’s international customer base.
Previous to the inception of Coastpak, Pacific Wide had been sourcing its product from Primewest Corporation who had a Sphagnum moss operation outside the township of Hokitika. Primewest was placed into receivership in late 1988. The initiative was taken to set up Coastpak and utilised staff from the defunct Primewest business. This gave us an opportunity to control our own quality, which allowed us to expand our product range as well as our sales.
Due to the dramatic increase of sales and the fact that we were working out of confined quarters, we called on a number of outside contractors to pack moss for us. This lead to quality control problems and in 1991 we built our own new facility at 3 Mile, Hokitika, which quickly addressed the problem. In 2004 we have continued to expand the operation with an increased extension to accommodate increased stock holding.
The objective of the company was to become self sufficient, which led to the purchase of Sphagnum moss swamps, as well as long term leases on Landcorp and DOC swamps. We also sought out a number of privately contracted swamps that again assisted our objective.
Since Coastpak’s inception it has built a reputation as an innovative, loyal and professional company with a focus on customer requirements and meeting strict quality control standards. Coastpak has a proud history and will continue to strive to produce the highest quality Sphagnum moss to grow the world’s best Orchids.
