Tropicoir Lanka (PVT) Ltd

Tropicoir Lanka (Pvt) Ltd was established in 1997, committed to the task of processing and exporting high quality, coir based growing media. Tropicoir was set up as a Board of Investment (BOI) company under the vision of Dinesh Fernando, Managing Director.

In our brief history of operation, Tropicoir has many achievements to its credit in product development and innovation. Since its inception Tropicoir has become the number one exporter of coir from Sri Lanka through uncompromising commitment to quality standards at every stage of processing and packaging. This has earned us a growing list of satisfied customers from around the world.

Our fully fledged production facility is situated in Hettipola in the Wayamba Province and is capable of handling over 1200 M/Tons per month in different forms of packaging. The head office is located at Dehiwala in Colombo which maintains administration, shipping and marketing.

Consistency of our products coupled with reliability of performance has brought us today to the leading position in the industry. Tropicoir is handled by a young, yet experienced team of professionals who are fully committed to the task of meeting specific requirements of individual clients.

For some years our Tropicoir Managing Director, Dinesh Fernando felt there was a need to assist the very poor people in the area where we source our supplies of Coir. There were a number of critical factors to consider but most important was the social issues.

As we are an export factory that relies on a loyal and dedicated quality conscious staff from the local area, it was Dinesh’s wish to be able to assist the people in need within the community.

It is our belief that the surrounding community must be made to feel an integral part of the life style of the company and this should not be restricted to employment opportunities. We must lend a helping hand whenever needed to enhance their quality of life.

During this time we as Directors of Tropicoir and residents of NZ wished to contribute in some way to help these families living in conditions which we would find unacceptable in New Zealand. Dinesh knowing our wishes knew the need for better housing and proposed the idea of the ‘Tropicoir Village’.

We approached all of the Directors, a few customers and the staff at Tropicoir to see if they would all support the project. The vote was unanimous and a budget was set in place to proceed. The Government Minister for housing was approached to consider donating land to the project which in time was agreed.

Construction of 12 houses started and finished some 54 days later. Due to the additional support of staff, who contributed considerable time without any expectation of payment or reward as well as good utilisation of funds, another 2 houses were built bringing the total to 14.

It was important to Dinesh and the directors that we wanted to make a change to the people’s lives and to give children in these extremely poor families some hope to achieve better into the future. A difficult selection process took place and a number of very poor families living in rundown conditions were chosen. Most of the families had young or unborn children and also some senior citizens were chosen who had contributed to the community without any thought to themselves.

This project went some small way to at least give some children a starting point in life. It is also planned that we are going to continue such projects bi-annually, either in more housing, schools or hospitals for the young.

If any of our clients wish to contribute to this project they will be welcomed with open arms. This project has made a difference to the community and has given hope to a large number of people.
